THE TRAGEDY OF THE COMMONS

Failing to manage resources for the public good can lead to their permanent loss. In District 3, our communal wealth thrives on vibrant main streets, which serve as “habitats” for innovative retail, immigrant-owned businesses, and a lively pub culture. Consider the fishermen in the video as developers and the fish as our vintage buildings, older rental homes, and unique bars. The pond represents Hawthorne street and the surrounding neighborhood. When transformed into "Vertical Suburbia," we risk losing the shared human enjoyment of Hawthorne, diminishing its character and appeal. It's essential to preserve these spaces to maintain the cultural richness and communal identity that define our District 3.

WE NEED TO ADD HOUSING TO OUR VINTAGE AREAS IN A SUSTAINABLE WAY THAT KEEPS OUR SHARED RESOURCE OF “AUTHENTIC PORTLAND PLACES” INTACT AND THRIVING.

WHAT IS VERTICAL SUBURBIA?

  • The Suburbs are Dull. Portland is Becoming Dull

You may think, who cares, as long as we're getting housing, but density without beauty is a disaster in the making. The suburbs can be dull and corporate because you get safety and space as a tradeoff. Urban areas need to offer something different. Creating places thoughtlessly creates places no one cares about that don't function well.

Working class and the working poor deserve to live in beautiful places. I can't believe that this building was allowed to be built like this. This is the front of the building. It looks like the back of the building. Ugliness stops people from walking. Walkability depends on places being interesting enough to make you want to walk.

  • Chaos is not a Style

You may think style is a luxury we can't afford in a housing crisis but this building is proof that you can spend a lot of money creating a giant eyesore. This is not affordable housing by the way, but it does make our city a little less likable. We need to have policies that create a fun, safe, experience grounded in proven design principles that are embedded in human and natural ecology. Randomness and carelessness in design will not keep Portland weird. It will make it "Meh". And a "Meh" place mens a "Meh" economy.
